Personal Statement On Driving Skills - 953 Words

An occasion in which I experienced a challenging communication interaction was the decision to prohibit my grandfather to continue to use his driving skills. At the time my grandfather was going through some health issues and was the only active driver between him and my grandmother. He had always been the dependent driver in the family. My grandfather suffers from selective hearing loss and sometimes loses feeling in his feet. He is no longer working and is considered to be in full retire mode. We were aware of his health issues but did not think it was that dangerous for him to continue to drive. One day while taking his routine route to the store, he lost feeling in his foot, which caused him to not be able to press his foot on the break hard enough to stop the car. Fortunately, he walked away from that accident with no major injuries. My grandfather has always felt the need to continue to drive because he does not feel that he should stop driving. When the accident happened, my f amily and I were startled. The level of need in the communication interaction falls under the criteria of a crisis. â€Å"A crisis is defined as a very large short term predicament† (Tamparo Lindh, 2008). According to Welter, the characteristic of a person in this level often has a sense of urgency and may want help but is afraid to ask (Tamparo Lindh, 2008). My family and I thought that it be best that my grandfather no longer drive.
